1 Corinthians 9:11
One day I went to an indoor mall and shared Jesus with a Black male store owner (I didnít know he was at first because he was outside leaning on the center railing). I got about half way through the Salvation tract when he stopped me and we had the following conversation with whom I will call Devan:
Devan: Look, you donít need to waste anymore of your time with me, I am a Moslem, I donít believe in any of that stuff.
Dale: Can I ask you a question?
Dale: Devan How do you know Mohammed is a prophet of God and that the Koran is Godís word?
Devan: Well there is no proof that the Bible is Godís only word either and that Jesus is God.
Dale: Devan, if a man today claimed to be God in the flesh, after we had a good laugh, our first question would be "What is Your proof to what you claim?" Jesus was asked that question, "Jesus, what is Your proof to Your claim to be God our creator in the flesh?" He gave them an answer. Do you know what that answer was?
Dale: He said "Kill Me and I will raise my body phisically alive! on the third day to prove to you that I am God your Creator in the flesh." If Jesus was who He claimed to be, the only true God in the flesh our Creator, the only way to God and that what he claimed is absolutely true truth, what better evidence could he give us than to recreate His physical body healthy and alive! They did kill Jesus, and the Bible tells us that on the third day he did rise from the dead physically alive with over 512 witnesses to the fact.
Devan: Well the Bible was written by a man, anybody could say that.
Dale: Devan the Bible was not the authorship of one man, but is the collection of written testimonies of several men who were eye-witnesses of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That is why it is called the New Testament because it is the testimony of many men, not one man. For example the Apostle John wrote in 1 John 1:1-3,
"What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we beheld and our hands handled, concerning the Word of Lifeóand the life was manifested, and we have seen and bear witness and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to usówhat we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, that you also may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ."
The Apostle Peter wrote in 2 Peter 1:16 "For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eye witnesses of His majesty." Luke, who was a doctor, wrote about Jesusí physical resurrection in Acts 1:3 "To these He also presented Himself alive, after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days, and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God."
Devan, Have you ever heard the expression "Doubting Thomas"?
Dale: That comes from a recorded account in the Bible concerning one of the Apostles of Jesusí whose name was Thomas. When Jesus first rose physically from the dead and appeared to His disciples, Thomas was out of town away on business. When he came back the disciples told him Jesus was physically alive! that they had seen and touched and talked with Him. Thomas said in response "Unless I shall see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe" (John 20:25). A Roman soldier stabbed his spear through Jesusí side right through his heart to make sure He was dead before they took him down. Later the disciples were gathered together again with Thomas and Jesus came in their midst and said, "Reach here Your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand, and put it into My side; and be not unbelieving, but believing." Thomas, it says, fell to his knees and said "My Lord and my God" (John 20:27-28). You see, Devan, even Jesusí own disciples had doubts about what He claimed about Himself, but after He rose from the dead, they no longer had any doubts. The Apostle John wrote in the Gospel of John 2:22 "When therefore He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture, and the word which Jesus had spoken" (John 2:22). Whenever Jesus spoke, He always quoted the Old Testament for authority over the righteous of what He had to say. Even His disciples had doubts about taking the Old Testament literally, but after Jesus rose from the dead, John tells us they no longer had any doubts about taking what the Old Testament taught literally or what Jesus said literally which is recorded in the New Testament. Devan, that is how we know that the Bible is true and truly Godís Word.
Devan, the Bible tell us that when Peter preached about Jesusí death and resurrection in the temple that 3,000 Jews came to Christ in one day. If what Peter preached had not been true, then all the authorities would have had to do was present the body, they had guarded with soldiers and with a Roman seal on the tomb which if broken incurred the death penalty, and show that their claims were false. If they had, everyone would have gone home and Christianity would have died on the spot! But no one did because their was NO BODY to show otherwise and Jesusí death and resurrection were already common knowledge. Not only that but it says in the Bible that after Jesusí resurrection, that also many of the Old Testament Saints rose from the dead and went through the city testifying about Jesus (Matthew 27:50-53), that this is why so many Jews came to Jesus Christ to start with.
Devan, not only that, but without raising a sword in a short time the Roman empire turned from being a pagan society to proclaiming Christianity the only true legal state religion.
At this point Devan got a flood of customers which meant that he had to go back into his store. However, before he did he asked me to wait until he returned while he waited on them. He left his
cordless phone on the railing so I knew he was going to come back, so I waited. While waiting I pulled out my book What the Bible Teaches About God, the Universe & Man intending to give it to him when he returned and our conversation ended.
I waited for about 15 minutes when finally he returned and told me he had a bunch of customers and would like to talk more and to feel free to come into the store any time to talk when he was free to. I gave him the book and explained to him how the first chapter explains what the Bible teaches about the nature of God and how the third Chapter explains the evidence God gave us of how we could know who the only true God is and what is His only true Book. He said very cheerfully and eargerly "Thankyou!" He had been obviously thinking about what I had already shared with him while waiting on customers and that it had a positive impact on him. He no longer had an angry demeanor, but had a smile on his face like a light had gone on inside and was very happy to receive something which would explain this further to him. Praise the Lord!
