When JWs state Holy Spirit is "Active Force" refer to these attributes of personality found in their New World Translation of the Bible:

Acts 13:2 Holy Spirit speaks
John 15:26 He bear witness
John 16:13 Says what He hears
Isaiah 63:10 He feels hurt

Blood Transfusions: Forbid Blood Transfusions first started in 1944. Scriptures they use:

Genesis 9:4 "Only flesh with its soul, its blood, you shall not eat."

Leviticus 7:26-27 "And you are not to eat any blood, either of bird or animal, in any of your dwellings. Any person who eats any blood, even that person shall be cut off from his people."

How To Respond: Explain that Orthodox Jews of today, who still scrupulously observe the regulations for kosher butchering and bleeding of meat, have no religious objection to blood transfusions. The way they are interpreting these passages was never practiced by the Jews.

If this does not accomplish your mission, quote to them Leviticus 3:17 which states, "You shall not eat any fat or any blood." Then ask them why Watchtower does not forbid the eating of fat?

Birthday Celebration Forbidden: They believe that only pagans like Pharaoh and Herod celebrated birthdays in the Bible and that it was always accompanied with the killing of men. Therefore they are not to celebrate their birthdays (Gen 40:20-22, Matthew 14:6, Mark 6:21).

How to respond: Point out that Pharaoh and King Herod were arbitrary rulers and violent men who killed on many occasions other than during their birthdays.

-Job’s sons and daughters celebrated each other’s birthdays (Job 1:4)

-John the Baptist’s birthday was celebrated recorded in The New World Translation Luke 1:14.

Bible: They are to study it, but only rely on the Watchtower’s interpretation of it. If a JW violates their teaching, they are disciplined.

How to respond: (John 8:47, Isaiah 8:20)

Jehovah & Exodus 3:15: This is the JW’s argument for stating that they are the only true believers because they call God by His only true name: Jehovah. They insist that Exodus 3:15 is God’s command to call him by that name for all time and eternity.

-They teach that because Christians pray to "God" or to "the Lord" are actually praying to the false god, Satan. They believe that the true God, Jehovah, does not hear prayers unless they are addressed to him by name.

-They acknowledge that Jehovah pronunciation is not correct to the Hebrew Jehovah, but insist on using Jehovah pronunciation only.

How To Respond: A comparison of Exodus 3:15 with verse 14 shows that the name Jehovah or Jehovah, has meaning: "God is the self-existing Eternal One." He is much more than a name, and knowing him involves much more than using a name. Jesus showed this clearly when He stated in Matthew 7:22-23 that not everyone who calls or prophecies or does miracles in His name knows Him.

Matthew 7:22-23 "Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’"

-Point out also that Jesus never started his prayers by saying "Jehovah God. . ." Rather Jesus started and instructed us to start our prayers with "Father. . ." (Matt 11:25, 26:39-42; Mark 14:36; Luke 10:21, 22:42, 23:34, 46; John 11:41, 12:27-28, 17:1-26).

-When instructing His disciples how to pray, He told them to pray "Our Father. . ." (Matt 6:9; Luke 11:2). We are instructed to have an intimate relationship with God like a father so that we are to address Him as "Abba! Father!" (Rom 8:15, Gal 4:6).

-Peter taught in Acts 4:12 that our salvation is only in Jesus’ name.

-Paul taught that Jesus’ name is above every name and that at His Name we are to bow and confess Him as Lord (Phil 2:9-11, quoted from Isaiah 45:21-23 referring to Jehovah, Jesus is Jehovah). See also Psalm 83:11,

Exodus 3:14-15 "And Elohim said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM;’ and He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, "Jehovah has sent me to you."’ And Elohim, furthermore, said to Moses, ‘Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, "Jehovah the Elohim of your fathers, the Elohim of Abraham, the Elohim of Isaac, and the Elohim of Jacob, has sent me to you." This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations.’"

Isaiah 43:10-11 "You are My witnesses," declares Yahweh, "And My servant whom I have chosen, in order that you

may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no Elohim formed, and there will be none after Me. I, even I, am Yahweh; and there is no Savior besides Me." (Is 43:10-11)

Palm 83:11 "That they may know that You alone, whose name is Jehovah, are the Most-High5945 over all the earth." (Psalm 83:11)

Acts 4:12 "And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:10-12)

Isaiah 45:21-23 "Declare and set forth your case; indeed, let them consult together. Who has announced this from of old? Who has long since declared it? Is it not I, Jehovah? And there is no other Elohim besides Me, a righteous Elohim and a Savior; there is none except Me. Turn to Me, and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am Elohim, and there is no other. I have sworn by Myself, the word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness and will not turn back, that to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance." (Isaiah 45:21-23)

Philippians 2:9-11 "Therefore also God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those who are in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord2962, to the glory of God the Father."

*Jesus Christ is Michael the Archangel: not God

1 Thessalonians 4:15-16 "For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, and remain until the coming of the Lord, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ shall rise first."

Daniel 10:13, 21; 12:1 ""But the prince of the kingdom of Persia was withstanding me for twenty-one days; then behold, Michael (who is like El?), one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left there with the kings of Persia. . . . However, I will tell you what is inscribed in the writing of truth. Yet there is no one who stands firmly with me against these forces except Michael your prince. . . . Now at that time Michael, the great prince who stands guard over the sons of your people, will arise. And there will be a time of distress such as never occurred since there was a nation until that time; and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the book, will be rescued."

Jehovah Witness teach that Jesus

  1. Is a mere angel who was born as a human.
  2. That He died as a sacrifice for sins.
  3. That He was raised as an angel once again.
  4. They refer to Him as "Jesus Christ, whom we understand from the Scriptures to be Michael the archangel (The Watchtower, 2/15/79, p. 31).

Therefore they change John 8:24 and 8:57-58 to read "I have been" instead of "I AM"; and Exodus 3:14 to say "I SHALL PROVE TO BE," thus making it appear there is no connection between these passages.

The Bible teaches about Michael that:

  • He is one of the foremost princes (Dan 10:13).
  • That he is the prince of Daniels people. (Dan 10:21).
  • That he is the great prince who is standing in behalf of the sons of Daniel’s people (Dan 12:1).
  • He is the one who disputed with the Devil about Moses’ body but did not dare bring judgment against Satan in abusive terms (Jude 9).
  • That he is a participant in heavenly conflict with other angels against Satan the Dragon (Revelation 12:7).

None of these mention Michael as being Jesus Christ.

  1. The Society also turns for support to another verse that does not use the name Michael but says that "the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a commanding call, with an archangel’s voice and with God’s trumpet" (1 Thess 4:16). But, if using an archangel’s voice makes the Lord an archangel, then having God’s trumpet makes him God—even though Watchtower leaders would have us look at only the first part of the verse.
  2. The first chapter of Hebrews makes plain that not only is Jesus higher than the angels, but God Himself, worshiped as God.

How to respond: JW’s own study Bibles prove that Jesus was claiming to be the "I AM." Their 1984 large-print New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures with References has a footnote on Exodus 3:14 admitting that the Hebrew would be rendered into Greed as "Ego Eimi"—"I AM." Also their 1985 Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures reveals that Jesus’ words at John 8:58 are the same "Ego Eimi" (footnote), "I am" (interlinear text).

*On The Trinity

They don’t believe in it, God is One: "Hear, O Israel! Yehovah our Elohim, Yehovah is one!" (Deut 6:4)

-When discussing the Trinity, share with Them Genesis 18-19 where Jehovah appears to Abraham as three men.

Genesis 18:3 — Abraham addresses them as Jehovah (Adonai, yn:doa}, 136)

Genesis 18:9, 13 — Jehovah is refered to as "They speaking"

Genesis 18:22, 30; 19:1, 18 — When two of the three men depart to visit Lot in Sodom, Abraham continues to call the remaining one Jehovah, but Lot addresses the other two as Adonai. When Sodom & Gomorah were destroyed, Moses records in Genesis 19:24,

Genesis 19:24 "Then Jehovah rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from Jehovah out of heaven."

This proves that God can be at more than one place at the same time and that He can hold simultaneous conversations with different people in different places.

This Accomplishes: This does not establish the doctrine of the Trinity, it does however show that God can manifest Himself as three-in-One. 1 Cor 13:12 tells us that we see God through a glass darkly.

Organ Transplants: In 1967 forbid but reversed this ruling in 1980.

Vaccinations: In 1931 Watchtower forbid but removed this ban in 1952.

*WatchTower The Prophet

Watchtower teaches that it is the prophet, that its followers are to follow them and listen to their voice. Moses explains how to tell a true prophet from a false one:

Deuteronomy 18:20-22 "But the prophet who shall speak a word presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he shall speak in the name of other elohims, that prophet shall die. And you may say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which Yehovah has not spoken?’ When a prophet speaks in the name of Yehovah, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which Yehovah has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him."

Jehovah Witnesses since their beginning have made many prophecies which have not come to pass:

  1. They predicted in the Watchtower’s book Thy Kingdom Come, edited in 1903, that Armageddon would come in 1914.
  2. Undaunted by this failure, they went on to predicted in their 1920 pulication of Millions Now Living Will Never Die (pp. 89-30) an earthly resurrection in 1925 and the return of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the faithful prophets of old.
  3. In the 8-15-68 publication of The Watchtower in an article titled "Why Are You Looking Forward to 1975?" they predicted that the end would come in 1975.
  4. In any current issue of a 1986 Awake! magazine in the inside front cover, on the page listing the contents of the magazine, there is a statement of purpose telling why Awake! is published:

"Most importantly, this magazine builds confidence in the Creator’s promise of a peaceful and secure new Order before the generation that saw the events of 1914 passes away."

How To Respond: Explain that the Watchtower on several occasions has spoken as a prophet and none of their prophecies have come true.

1. Have them read Deuteronomy 18:20-22 and then ask what they think God would have him or her do?

Matthew 7:15 "Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves."

Matthew 24:24 "For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect."

2. Then tell them that Deuteronomy 18:20-22 tells them that they are not to be afraid of false prophets.

3. Encourage them then to stop following them and follow the true prophet Jesus Christ.

*Jehovah Witnesses Will POSSES THE EARTH

The Watchtower teaches that faithful Jehovah Witnesses will not go to heaven, since only 144,000 could and already have, but can possess the earth. Their bases for this is:

Psalm 37:9, 11, 29 "For evildoers will be cut off, but those who wait for Yehovah, they will inherit the land. . . . But the humble will inherit the land, and will delight themselves in abundant prosperity. . . . The righteous will inherit the land, and dwell in it forever." (Others: Psalm 115:16, John 10:16, Rev 7:9)

How To Respond:

1. First, explain that this passage is not referring to the future time but what Israelites could expect to see in their life time. Psalm 37:25 confirms this when David states:

Psalm 37:25 "I have been young, and now I am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, or his descendants begging bread."

2. Our destiny as believers is Heaven.

John 14:2-3 "In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for You, I will come again, and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also."

John 17:20, 24 "I do not ask in behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through Their word. . . . Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, in order that they may behold My glory, which You have given Me; for You did love Me before the foundation of the world."

3. As the JWs if they have believed on Christ through the word of the Apostles. If they can truly answer yes, then they are included in Christ’s prayer that all future believers would end up with him in heaven

Philippians 1:21-22 "For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose."

2 Corinthians 5:8 "We are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord."

*We Are Called to Be Witnesses of JEHOVAH

Isaiah 43:10 "You are My witnesses," declares Jehovah, "And My servant whom I have chosen, in order that you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no Elohim formed, and there will be none after Me. I, even I, am Yahweh; and there is no Savior besides Me." (Is 43:10-11)

  1. JWs use this passage to say they are God’s only true witnesses because they witness in the name of Jehovah.
  2. They started out as Russellites from 1870 to 1931 when the new name Jehovah Witnesses was officially adopted by a resolution passed at their Columbus, Ohio convention. This was done to distinguish them from other Ressellite Groups.
  3. God, however does not single out a group because they call themselves Jehovah Witnesses to the exclusion of all others. Jesus showed that more was involved than just a name when He said:

Matthew 7:21-23 "Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’"

4. Jesus said we would be His witnesses, not Jehovah Witnesses. We are to witness about Jesus, and Acts 11:26 tells us that Jesus’ witnesses were called Christians.

Acts 1:8 "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth."

Acts 11:26 "The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch."

*Jesus is a mighty god, not God Almighty

Isaiah 9:6 "For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, El-Almighty, Father-of-Eternity, Prince-of-Peace." (Isaiah 9:6)

1. JWs teach that this verse says Jesus is "a mighty god", not God-Almighty. The following passages however show clearly that Jehovah is also called a Mighty-God:

Jeremiah 32:18 "O great and Mighty-El. Yehovah of hosts is His name."

Isaiah 10:20-21 "Now it will come about in that day that the remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob who have escaped, will never again rely on the one who struck them, but will truly rely on Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel. A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to Mighty-El."

*NO LIFE After Death

Ezekiel 18:4 ""Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine. The soul who sins will die."

Psalm 146:3-4 "Do not trust in princes, in mortal man, in whom there is no salvation. His spirit departs, he returns to the earth; in that very day his thoughts perish."

  1. Respond to JWs concerning this passage by bring out to them that in context that verses 1-2 tells us that God is to be praised. Verse 5 in contract to man, God is a Helper who gives secure hope, who created the heaven and the earth (v. 6), who brings justice for the oppressed (v. 7), who heals the sick (v. 8), who cares about the lowly ones (v. 9), and who is King forever (v. 10).
  2. Man, on the other hand, offers no real salvation (v. 3), because he himself dies and everything he intended to do dies with him (v. 4).

Ecclesiastes 9:5 "For the living know they will die; but the dead do not know anything, nor have they any longer a reward, for their memory is forgotten."

1. The Book of Ecclesiastes presents many different viewpoints: the secular, materialistic versus the godly, the spiritual one.

2. The godly viewpoint triumphs in the end in Ecclesiastes 12:1 & 13:

Ecclesiastes 12:1, 13 "Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near when you will say, "I have no delight in them" The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person."

3. Verse 6 states that the dead will never have anything forever. Ask the JW if he believes that the dead are gone forever? He will tell you no because he believes he will be raised to live on the earth.

4. Verse 2 expresses the thought that "one fate comes to all, to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil," an idea that contradicts everything else the Scripture teaches. Ask the JW if he believe that he will receive the same fate, whether he is righteous or wicked? His answer will be no.

5. Then share and have him read to you the following scriptures which show clearly that one continues consciously after they die:

Revelation 6:9-11 "And when He broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained; and they cried out with a loud voice saying, ‘How long, O Lord, holy and true, will You refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who dwell on the earth?’ And there was given to each of them a white robe; and they were told that they should rest for a little while longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brethren who were to be killed even as they had been, should be completed also."

Matthew 22:31-32 "But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read that which was spoken to you by God, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.""

1. Here men had been killed, but their souls live on in the presence of God engaging in conversation with Him.

Philippians 1:21-24 "For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose. But I am hard-pressed from both directions having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake."

Luke 16:23-24 ""Now it came about that the poor man died and he was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. And in hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away, and Lazarus in his bosom."

2 Corinthians 5:8 "We are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord."

Luke 12:4-5 "And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who after He has killed has authority to cast into hell, yes, I tell you, fear Him!"

Colossians 3:1-3 "If then you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God."

Matthew 6:19-21 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."
