Jesus was taken before Pilate by the Jewish High Priests for
examination before His crucifixion, Jesus said to Pilate at one
point in the course of their conversation,
"You say correctly that I am a king for this I
have been born, and for this I have come into the world,
to bear witness to the truth. Everyone
who is of the truth hears My voice."216
Pilate said to Jesus in response, What is
How do we know that the Judeo Christian Bible is
true? How do we know that we can rely upon it as the absolute Word
of God and as the basis for determining our individual and community
conduct? How do we know God inspired it? How do we know that Jesus
is from God? Jesus said about Himself over and over, "No one has
ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven, even the Son
of Man.... You are from below, I am from above; you are of
this world, I am not of this world."219 Jesus claimed
over and over to be God and it was primarily for this reason that
the Jews handed him up to Pilate to be crucified. Was Jesus God? Or
a mad man? How do we know that what He claimed about Himself was
true? How do we know that what He claimed about Heaven and Hell is
John quoted Jesus as saying to the Jews in John
"If you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for
he wrote of Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you
believe My words?"
If Jesus was truly God then He could not lie
(Titus 1:2, Heb 6:18). If He was God and thus could not lie then
what He said would be absolute true truth. Jesus put the writings of
Moses and the Old Testament at the same level as His spoken words.
Jesus saw the Bible as absolutely true truth in all that it affirms.
Jesus said to the Jews that if they did not believe What Moses wrote
in the Old Testament that they would not believe His words either.
If Adam and Eve were not real People who really sinned and fell out
of relationship with God, then Jesus' coming and death and
Resurrection have no meaning and their value to us as man in
restoring us to relationship with God are under suspect.
God gave us the Bible through the hands of men in
historical setting for confirmation and verification of its
validity. No Archaeological fact of history has ever contradicted
one teaching of Scripture but has instead totally and absolutely
confirmed the validity of what it teaches historically (See Chapters
2, 3, 4 6 and 7 in this Section).
God gave the Bible to us because we could never
discover the truth about ourselves and the universe unless He
revealed it to us. This is because we are finite and limited. Finite
man can never discover for himself the truth about himself or the
universe's beginning. God gave it to us because He really is and
because He really did create us and the universe.
God still speaks to us today, but He has given us
the written record of the Bible to give us the ability to discern
what is truly His voice and messenger. This is what Jesus was saying
to the Jews in the above passage. He was telling them that if they
were really putting their trust in what Moses wrote and were really
reading it, they would know that Jesus was who He claimed to be and
that He was the Messiah, the Christ from God. Finally, they would
also realize that He was Yehovah, their God out of Heaven in the
We ask, How can we know that the Bible is
reliable historically, cosmologically, scientifically and
theologically? We know it is true because Jesus is true. And we know
that Jesus is true because He proved to us He was true, that He was
God the Word who became man, God the Son, and that the Bible as He
claimed is absolute true truth because
He came back from the dead to prove to us that His testimony was
"The Jews therefore answered and said to Him,
‘What sign do You show to us, seeing that You do these things?’"
They were asking Jesus, How do we know you are
who you claim to be? What is your proof to us that you really did
come from God, that you are the Messiah, that your words are true?
Jesus responded back to them,
"‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will
raise it up’. . . . But He was speaking of the temple of His body.
When therefore He was raised from the dead, His disciples
remembered that He said this; and they believed the SCRIPTURE,
and the WORD which Jesus had spoken." (John 2:18-22).
This passage of Scripture tells us that not only
were the Jews questioning the validity of who Jesus claimed to be
and how literal the Old Testament should be taken (not a new idea)
but so did His disciples. But what brought Jesus’ disciples to a
place of so strongly believing in Jesus as God the Son and the Bible
as the absolute Word of God? It was Jesus fulfilling His promise to
come back from the dead to prove to us that the Bible and His claims
about himself were true. After Jesus’ Resurrection His Apostles and
disciples believed that the Bible, Jesus’ words and who Jesus
claimed to be were absolute true truth. This is our absolute proof
that the Bible is absolutely true truth and reliable for us today:
The RESURRECTION of Jesus Christ.
"When therefore He was raised from the dead, His disciples believed
the Scripture, and the word which Jesus had spoken."
Was Jesus’ Resurrection just a story
prefabricated by Jesus’ disciples (a story they all died to defend)?
What did the recognized Roman and Jewish historian, Josephus, of
that day have to say about this event?
"Now there was about this time Jesus, a wise man,
if it be lawful to call him a man; for he was a doer of wonderful
works, a teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure. He
drew over to him many Jews, and also many of the Greeks. This man
was the Christ. And when Pilate had condemned him to the cross, upon
his impeachment by the principal man among us, those who had loved
Him from the first did not forsake him,
for he appeared to them alive on the third day, as
the divine prophets having spoken these and thousands of other
wonderful things about him. And even now, the race of Christians, so
named from Him, has not died out."165/385
One time while sharing with a college student
that there were over 512 witnesses to the fact of Jesus’
Resurrection, he said in response, "It was mass hysteria!" I told
him that if they only saw what they thought was Jesus in the
distance for a moment and then he was gone that this would be a good
argument, but that this was not the case. I told him that the
physician Luke wrote in the book of Acts 1:3 that He did not just
appear to them for a moment alive, but that He then walked with
them, talked with them and ate with them for forty days with many
"To these He also presented Himself alive, after
His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over
a period of forty days, and speaking of the things concerning
the Kingdom of God."
During this time they had plenty of time to
examine Jesus’ wounds, to call his mother and brothers over and ask,
Is this truly Jesus? So convinced were Jesus’ disciples that
He did rise from the dead that they all died martyrs’ deaths
upholding this claim without wavering. Jesus came back from the
dead, as Luke wrote, "By many convincing proofs, appearing to them
over a period of forty days, and speaking of the things concerning
the kingdom of God."
No other religion or teacher of man stated that
they would come back from the dead to prove that their teachings and
claims were true about God, man and the Universe. Wilbur M. Smith
stated about Buddha,
"The original accounts of Buddha never ascribe to
him any such thing as a resurrection; in fact, in the earliest
accounts of his death, namely, the ‘Mahaparinibbana Sutta’, we read
that when Buddha died it was ‘with that utter passing away in which
nothing whatever remains behind.’"218/385
Professor Childers wrote,
"There is no trace in the Pali scriptures or
commentaries (or so far as I know in any Pali book) of Sakya Muni
having existed after his death or appearing to his disciples.
Mohammed died June 8, 632 A.D., at the age of sixty-one, at Medina,
where his tomb is annually visited by thousands of devout
Mohammedans. All the millions and millions of Jews, Buddhists, and
Mohammedans agree that their founders have never come up out of
the dust of the earth in resurrection."218/385
Joseph Smith, the writer of the Book of Mormon,
died and is still dead, buried in the grave. Darwin is still in the
grave. He never came back from the dead to prove that the teachings
of Evolution are true.
The point of all that has been said is this, it
is nice that we have scientific and historical confirmation of the
reliability of Scripture (Not one fact of history or archaeological
discovery has ever proved any historical teaching of Scripture wrong
nor the facts of science either), but the undeniable evidence of
Jesus’ Resurrection with over 512 witnesses (1 Cor 15) to the fact
is our proof that Jesus was who He claimed to be, God the Messiah
who became man to die for our sins, and that His Word written down
in the Bible is absolutely true truth in all that it affirms
scientifically, historically, cosmologically and theologically, so
that we can rely on it and it alone as a basis for determining
whether our laws and teachings are true or not or just or not. The
Bible is our basis for determining what is absolutely true and what
is absolutely false.
Nothing else is necessary. Nothing else is
necessary because Jesus came back from the dead to prove to us that
we could rely on the Bible and all that it teaches one- hundred
