Section 6, Chapter 12

You Must Be Born From Above

By Dale P. Kruse

Back to Chapter 11, Chapter 13

One Sunday afternoon we came to the door of a man by the name of Lucio. As we went through the survey and came to the question which asks If you were to die tonight, do you know for sure whether or not you would go to heaven? He answered, I do not know. We then asked Him the question, If someone were to come up to you and say, "I want to go to heaven! What must I do to go there?" What would be your answer to him? He answered, Believe in God, pray, I think be bornagain.

Lucio went on to explain to us that he had recently visited a Church in Fresno, California where he was told that he must be bornagain to be saved, but it was not explained to him what this meant. We then asked the question, If you could know for sure how to go to heaven and have eternal life would you be interested in knowing how? Lucio answered, Yes I would. Because Lucio had been told that he must be born again, I chose to go straight to John chapter 3 and use it as the foundation in sharing the Gospel with him.

Dale: Jesus said, John 3:5-6 "Truly, truly, I say to You , unless one receives-birth from-above, he cannot see the kingdom of God. . . . Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one receives birth of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which receives birth from the flesh is flesh, and that which receives birth from the Spirit is spirit." You see, Lucio, it is not enough to be religious to be saved. What separates us from God is not just our sin, but our very soul and flesh which have been corrupted through our sin. This is why Jesus said we must be born from above. When Jesus died on the cross, it was not just to save us from our sin, but from our very selves as well.

Romans 6:23 states, "For the wages of sin is death." When the Bible talks about death, it is not talking about non-existence or even physical death. When the Bible states that the wages of sin is death, it means to be eternally separated from God. Paul writes in 2 Thessalonians 1:9 "And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power." This is why religious acts do not save us because it is not just the sin in our lives which separate us from God, but our very selves which are corrupted which can never come into God's presence and endure or enjoy His perfectly Holy Nature. In our present corrupted state, heaven would be hell for us. This is why Jesus states that we must be born from above to enter the kingdom of God; that is, in order to enjoy God's presence and His holy Kingdom. We must be recreated into the likeness and image of God so as to be as holy and perfect and sinless as Jesusí Himself is.

Well this brings up the next question which is how do we receive birth from above? We are born from above when we receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Jesus said in Revelations 3:20 "Behold, I stand at the door and knock, if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with Me." God the Father tells us in 1 John 5:11-12 that only those who have Jesus living in them will be saved and be given eternal life. John states in this passage,

"And the witness is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life."

God the Father plainly tells us that to have the Son is to have eternal life, not whether you go to Church or belong to this Church or that Church, but only if you have Jesus living in you. Paul the Apostle confirms this in Colossians 1:27 "Christ in you, the hope of glory." Again in 2 Corinthians 13:5 "Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in youĖunless indeed you fail the test?"

When you do receive Jesus Christ into your life, the Bible teaches that you are born from above. This means that Your spirit is instantly recreated alive through the Holy Spirit which means that you enter back into relationship with God. The Apostle Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come." It also means that since Jesus Christ has come to live in you that You also now have the uncreated life of God in you which means that you have eternal life.

Your new created spirit is identical to Christís nature. It is this new nature that enters heaven. Paul wrote about our corrupted soul and flesh 1 Corinthians 15:50 "Now I say this, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption."

Even after receiving birth from above, on this side of heaven our soul and flesh remain sinfully corrupted. Paul explains how our soul and body will be recreated new and sinless. He writes,

1 Cor 15:51-52 "Behold, I tell you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed."

This is why even though Christians are born from above, their lives on this side of heaven are not perfect or without sin. They

are recreated in their spirits but the creation of the soul and flesh does not take place until the physical resurrection.

But in order to be receive birth from above and be recreated in your spirit, soul and flesh, you must receive Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. This is because when you receive Jesus Christ into Your heart you are made one spirit with Him (1 Cor 6:17) and therefore whatever is true for Jesus becomes true for you. Jesusí death becomes death for Your sins and His resurrection to new life and glory becomes Your resurrection to glory in the future. This is why Paul writes about the Christian who has received birth from above and become one spirit with Jesus,

Colossians 3:1-4 "If then you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory."

Lucio, would you like to receive Jesus Christ into your heart?

Lucio: How do I do it? (Brothers and sisters the fields are ripe).

Dale: By simply praying and asking Jesus to come into your heart. If you would like I can pray how I prayed when I received Jesus and if you want to you can repeat it after me and invite Jesus into your heart.

Lucio: Okay.

Comments:

Lucio did pray with my partner and myself and received Jesus into His heart. We gave Him our discipleship books for instruction of how to grow in his new relationship with Jesus. We also shared with him that because he has received Jesus into his heart he has received birth from above and now has Godís uncreated life in Him in the person of Jesus Christ and that as a result he now has eternal life and will go to heaven.
