Study Questions

When training laymen in Evangelism my favorite theme song is "It is the Time to Take the Kingdom" (Author unknown):

It is the time to take the Kingdom
Rise up be strong, Ďtis Christís command
For every power and dominion
Is given now into your hands.
He that has ears to hear the trumpet call,
He that has heart to understand,
It is the time to take the Kingdom,
Rise up be strong, possess the land.

David Livingstone was one of the first major missionaries to Africa. After he came to know Jesus he began wondering what Jesus would have him to do with his life. The great commission given in Matthew 28:18-20 was constantly impressed upon his mind. Jesus said:

"All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

He learned from this passage:64/103-108

"All authority is given unto me."
The same power is available!

"Go and evangelize all nations."
The same program is operative!

"Lo, I am with you."
The same presence is assured!

He understood that the call to go and the above promises given to that call are an ever present now and that they applied to Him. He decided to go to medical school and prepare himself for the missionary field. He eventually went to Africa and became one of the single greatest influences for Christianity in Africa to ever live.

When he went to Chonuane, Africa to establish a new missionary station, he met a chief of a tribe there named Sechele. Sechele called all his people together to hear Livingstone preach. Upon hearing the message the chief exclaimed, "This is wonderful. But my forefathers were living at the same time yours were. How is it that they never heard of the love of God and of Jesus the Saviour? Why did they all pass away into deep darkness?" This was a just and strong rebuke against the Church of God which Jesus commissioned to reach out to all the nations with the Gospel. When Sechele made this statement more than 3/4 of humanity were still living in darkness. No one who claims to be a Christian can take the luxury of sitting out the war of the battle of the souls of men. The Battle is great and only as we all do our part can the harvest be brought in.

Why was the Gospel so slow in coming? Why did our fathers pass away into deep darkness? Does not the Lordís command require obedience? Does not the Kingís business require haste?

Harold Armstrong Baker, who was a missionary to Tibet, China and Formosa, had an orphanage in which he and his wife brought in Chinese beggar boys. God sovereignly chose to visit these orphans in an unusual way, giving a tremendous out pouring of the Holy Spirit upon them, manifested through God taking these boys (several) up into heaven to witness the life to come. In one of the cases of these beggar boys, while he was translated into heaven in spirit, Jesus chose to allow those in the service to witness the conversation that Jesus had with this beggar boy by speaking through the Holy Spirit through his mouth what we might call a word of prophecy but what was to this boy a face to face conversation with Jesus. Because it was spoken through the boy in a room of many witnesses, slow enough for all to hear, they were able to write it down as it was given. This was what the Lord said to the occupants in the Church Service through this Chinese beggar boy:

"I weep tonight. I am heart-broken. I am in deep sorrow because those who believe in me are so very few. I planned and prepared heaven for every one, having made room for all the people in all the world. I made the New Jerusalem in three great cities, one above the other, with plenty of space for all men. But men will not believe me. (This message was given between heart-rending sobs and floods of tears from the boy). Since men will not believe me, I must destroy the wicked earth.

"If you have any friends, tell them to repent quickly; persuade all men as rapidly as possible to believe the gospel; but if people will not listen and will not accept your message the responsibility will not be upon you.

"Get the baptism of the Holy Spirit. If you will tarry and believe, I will baptize you. The devil deceives you by making you think you will not receive the baptism, but wait and seek and I will baptize you, and give you power to cast out devils and to heal the sick.

"If you think perhaps you will not get to heaven, that thought is of the devil. I will not destroy my own children; I will protect and save every one; not one of mine will perish. I will overcome....

"Tell other churches they, too, should seek the Holy Spirit. All churches must press forward.

"The devil is coming to earth in a few years, and there will be great tribulation. Do not worry; I will protect and care for you.

"People everywhere will gather together and fight in one place, after which I will come to punish the earth. You must not fear, for those who believe in me will be caught up to blow trumpets and to play harps (Something the children enjoyed doing in heaven).

"I will destroy two of every three. When I come everything must obey my voice. Houses will tumble down; mountains will fall; trees will be destroyed. There will be utter destruction where I will not leave one blade of grass. Those who worship idols will perish. All sorcerers and spiritist mediums shall be cast into hell. Only those who believe the Gospel will be saved."66/100-101

Brothers and sisters, the call to go out into your home town, Samaria and to the uttermost parts of the earth is given to every born again Christian. The time is not a week from now, a month from now or a year from now. The Apostle Paul admonishes us that the Time is NOW! Paul writes: "Behold, NOW is the acceptable time, behold, NOW is the day of salvation." (2 Cor 6:2). Jesus has already assured us of his authority, power and presence. None of us has a legitimate excuse for not getting involved in the battle. This is why "It is the Time to Take the Kingdom" is my theme song. It symbolizes my heart, focus, attitude and intent. I believe that the Bible teaches clearly it is always the time to do Evangelism and that it is the responsibility of every born again Christian to take that Gospel to lost hurting humanity. I am personally committed to reaching my city with the message of Jesus Christ and to equipping and training Laymen to do the same.
