While man previously knew God by Yahweh, God tells Moses in Exodus 6:3 that He had not revealed Himself to man by this name until He delivered the Israelites out of the bondage of Egypt. God did not mean here that He had not made His name, Yahweh, known before, but that he had not made known his character and power by that name manifested through His deliverance of the Israelites out of bondage to Egypt. Before they knew God by the name Yahweh. Now they know the God behind the name Yahweh.
