Relationship With Jesus
The Key To Effective Ministry

Section 2, Chapter 1

How to Bear the Most Fruitful Possible

Study Questions:
  1. What is required to bear the most fruit possible in our relationship with Jesus?

Several years ago while going through a two year degree in electronic technology a pressure was put upon me to make a decision which would have effected the next four years of my life. The motivation of the people who were putting this pressure upon me was not out of love, and it contradicted Jesus' previous command to go through the present two year degree in electronics I was pursuing. Jesus' word states in Malachi 3:6 "For I the Lord do not change" and in Hebrews 13:8 it states "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, yes and forever." Jesus clearly tells us in his word that once he gives us a command concerning our lives he does not change it. So the issue was not that I wanted to rebel against Jesus’ will for my life, but in fact wanted to submit to his will and purpose for my life. The present pressure being put upon me contradicted His already established will in my life. I turned to Jesus in prayer and prayed,

"Jesus, if I do respond to this pressure I won't be doing it because I see your love in it but out of fear. If I do it in this context not only will I resent the people putting this pressure upon me but I will also resent You. Your word states that "The love of Christ controls us." If you want me to make this move with my life then you will have to show me Your love in it for Your Word promises it. Otherwise, from this day forward I will no longer make a decision out of fear." (2 Cor 5:14, 2 Tim 1:7).

Three months later I was sitting in church during an evening service when the Lord came to me in my spirit and said to me,

"You have been faithful and have not endured evil men. For this reason I am going to give you my power."

After that if anyone came to me with a physical problem, if I prayed for them they were healed. I thought to myself,

"This is cool Lord, but why are you doing this?"

He answered back to me,

"You have overcome the problem of fear. For this reason not only can you pray for a person's healing, but you can also counsel them so that nothing worse comes upon them."

I responded back,

"I do not understand Lord?"

He replied in response,

"Not all sicknesses, but the root cause of of many sicknesses and problems is fear. That is, they did something out of fear and it eventually led to the problems they now have physically. For example: Adam and Eve. It was out of fear that they ate of the forbidden fruit, a questioning of my love, that led to their fall and all the suffering and sicknesses of humanity today. You have overcome the problem of fear. Therefore you can not only pray for a person's healing but counsel them in such a way that they do not fall back into the same trap."

I did not fully understand at that time what he meant by I could counsel them, nor did I realize that what He was telling me was a prophecy for my future development and ministry to come.

Six months later Jesus told me what He wanted me to do with my life next. The way it came about was in the following context: I was sitting in my room reading the last chapter of a textbook on electronics which brought me to the conclusion of my two year degree in electronic technology. When I finished the book, the Lord came to me in my spirit and said the following,

"Well done good and faithful servant. Because you have been faithful in little I am going to put you in charge of much. You are an Evangelist, Overseer, Teacher." (Matt 25:14-30).

Immediately following the visitation, Jesus opened three doors in these three areas and confirmed the vision in ministry and power, and through my church.

Not long after that He told me he wanted me to go back to a Christian University and finish my studies in theology. After I graduated in electronics I did just that.

When I first got to this Christian University the anointing for healing continued. I saw some dramatic healings. Through prayer I saw this one man's knees swollen to the size of mush balls, destroyed through athletic abuse and told he could never play sports again by his doctors, instantly healed to normal size.

One night I was talking with a sister that I had a fondness toward. As we talked she shared with me that she had an eye problem of being cross-eyed for which she wore glasses to correct. I asked her to let me pray for her. I did and nothing happened. I did not understand why.

When I got back to my room I got on my knees and prayed, "Jesus, why wasn't this girl healed? What is wrong with my faith." He answered me back by first bringing to my mind a verse in the Gospel of John which states,

"Jesus therefore answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner." (Jn 5:19).

Then He said to me,

"The gift of faith is my gift and it only operates when I want it to operate. From now on I want you to look to me for My counsel about how to pray for a person's need and only pray as I lead you to."

This was the beginning of the fulfillment of the prophecy about being able to counsel his people in such a way that they would not fall into something worse than what they were being presently healed of.

While attending college that semester I saw a film series by Dr. Francis A. Schaeffer titled, "How Should We Then Live?".17 It dealt with the history of humanities and man's present dilemma from a Christian perspective.

In this series Dr. Schaeffer talked about what made democracy a possible working model in our society. He said that originally freedom was made possible in our society because our freedom was checked by an absolute moral base: The Bible. That is, man had inward restraint in his consideration of setting up laws and justice within a framework of government which considered man's right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, freedom of the press and religion.

Dr. Schaeffer continued to explain that the reason for increased crime, riots, terrorism and lack of swift justice in society today is a result of man having done away with this moral base the Bible. Because man no longer considers the Bible as a basis for morality, he is left to himself, humanism, to decide what is true knowledge, meaning, and value in his society. The only problem, though, is that everybody has his own idea of what the ideal basis for morality and justice is in society. The result is that today we have increased crime and violence, confusion in the courts and an inability to bring about justice swiftly. We are no longer able to put a restraint on crime because we cannot decide in our legislation and courts what our basis for morality is to be. The end result is that the criminal is given more protection than the law abiding citizen.

If man continues to reject the Bible as the basis for morality, the end result will be, Dr. Schaeffer points out, that those who are worn out with injustice in society will look toward a stronger more forceful government to bring order into society. His base will not matter as long as it brings peace in society. Eventually this will be felt on a world scale and will probably lead to the world looking for a man of strong leadership to bring about this order.

After I got through listening to this film series I sat back in my chair and thought to myself,

"Dr. Schaeffer, I know, knows the Bible better than I do and he knows as well as I do that the Bible prophesies that this is what will happen in the last days.7 Jesus, if it is true that evil will seemingly become more dominant in society in these last days than good, where does this place the church's role in society today?"

Then I got a little more specific,

"Jesus, how can I as an individual be as effective in my generation as You want me to be for Your purpose as Your Father wanted You to be while a man on earth?"

Jesus answered me back by bringing a passage to my mind,

"Jesus therefore answered and was saying to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.’" (John 5:19).

He then said to me, "Do the same and you will be as fruitful in your generation as I want you to be, as My Father wanted Me to be in my generation."

Then I understood. I purposed that day in my heart that I would to the best of my ability no longer act or speak out of my own initiative, but would like a child look to Jesus for everything; that I would literally seek to enter into relationship with Him and not just act or react to situations or circumstances out of my own initiative but would wait upon Him for His clear counsel before moving out or speaking out.
